Summer Harmony Camp 2005 was a huge success, with fifty-three girls and forty boys in attendance at the YMCA Camp in Estes Park. Over the wet and soggy days of June 3, 4 & 5, the middle school and high school students developed their vocal production skills and had a blast singing barbershop music. Bonus Track, Region 8’s Fourth place medalists, guided the girls in sectionals on Friday afternoon. That evening, the girls continued with rehearsals and met up with the boys at a social mixer featuring square dancing. Using funky/hip-hop music and standard square dance calls, the kids and chaperones were soon hooting and hollering at the Jellison Youth Center. Saturday continued with individual rehearsals, lunch, free time, and a joint rehearsal with the boys and girls in Hemple Auditorium. “Tag, You’re It,” the first place girl’s quartet winners from the High School Quartet Competition, were privileged to coach with The Summit, a men’s quartet from Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Saturday evening show, part of the Estes Park Summer Concert Fest, featured the YWIH chorus, singing “Let Me Sing and I'm Happy,” “Dream a Little Dream of Me,”

Harmony Camp concludes each year with the music students singing at the Sunday morning church service at Hyde Chapel.

The YMIH chorus, directed by John Fenner, sang “Coney Island Baby,” “This Little Light of Mine,” “Up a Lazy River,” and “They Go Wild Over Me.” The two choruses combined to sing “Play a Simple Melody” and “Lida Rose/Dream of Now.” The “Chicklets” from Clear Creek High school, “Tag, You're It,” “Bonus Track,” and “The Summit” provided additional barbershop music for a packed auditorium.
The students concluded the week-end by singing at the Sunday morning church service in Hyde Chapel at the Y-camp.Summer Harmony Camp provides a wonderful opportunity for area music students to learn more about our love of barbershop singing. The girls and chaperones offer many, many heartfelt thanks to Region 8 for funding this experience! If YOU are interested in being a music counselor for next year’s camp, please contact Mel Horgan,
